Accessibility Statement

Conformance target

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, which is the standard the U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. courts most commonly reference when applying Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act to websites.

Current status: partially conformant. Most of the standard is met. The known gaps are listed below rather than hidden, because an honest list is more useful than a claim of perfection.

What has been done

• Colour contrast is measured, not estimated. Every text and background pair on the site was checked programmatically against the rendered colours, including text over gradients and over translucent surfaces. All pairs meet or exceed the AA thresholds of 4.5:1 for body text and 3:1 for large text.
• Nothing depends on colour alone. Status and meaning are carried by fill, label and shape as well. Red and green are not used to distinguish states.
• Semantic structure. The page uses real landmark elements for the header, navigation, main content and footer, and a heading order that runs from one level to the next without skipping.
• Keyboard access. All interactive elements are reachable and operable by keyboard, in a logical order, with a visible focus indicator. A "Skip to content" link is the first item in the tab order.
• Forms. Every field has a programmatically associated label. Required fields are marked visually and in code.
• Images. Meaningful images have descriptive alternative text. Decorative graphics are hidden from assistive technology so they do not create noise.
• Motion. The site honours the operating system "reduce motion" setting. With it enabled, animation and scroll effects stop and the page remains fully readable.
• Moving content can be stopped. The scrolling list of tools on the home page has a visible Pause control that works with mouse, touch and keyboard, and reports its state to assistive technology. It pauses automatically when reduced motion is requested.
• Zoom and reflow. Content reflows to a single column and remains readable without horizontal scrolling down to a 320 pixel viewport width, and at 200 percent browser zoom.
• Target size. Interactive targets meet the 24 by 24 pixel minimum of WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.5.8.
• Language. The page language is declared so screen readers use the right pronunciation.

Known limitations

We are aware of the following and are working on them:

• Form validation messages rely on the browser's built in error bubbles, which appear one field at a time and are not styled by us. A custom, persistent, screen reader friendly error summary is planned.
• Some decorative animation runs continuously when reduced motion is not requested. None of it conveys information, and all of it stops when reduced motion is on.
• Contact is by form and email only. There is no published telephone number at present. If either channel is a barrier for you, say so in whichever one you can use and we will find another way.

Our position on accessibility overlays

This site does not use an accessibility overlay, toolbar or widget. Overlays frequently interfere with the assistive technology a person already uses and configured, and they do not make an inaccessible site accessible. We fix the site itself instead.

Assessment approach

Conformance was assessed by self evaluation, combining manual keyboard and structure review with programmatic measurement of rendered colour contrast, heading order, landmark presence, form labelling, target sizes and reflow behaviour at multiple viewport widths. This site has not yet been audited by an independent third party.

Compatibility

The site is built to work with current versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge, on desktop and mobile, together with the assistive technology built into those platforms. It may not work as well in browsers more than two major versions old.
